Addressing Gun Violence: Guiding Principles for Systems Change

The presenters met regularly over the course of a year to compile a research report that was requested by and submitted to the Tacoma City Council. The authors first engaged in a review of relevant literature and research on gun violence prevention and intervention and the broader field of violence prevention. During this review, six principles were identified among the intervention strategies that were found to be effective and sustainable. Dr. Cruz will provide an overview of research on the consistent relationships between extreme inequality, concentrated disadvantage, community-level traumatic stress, and gun violence. And based on a review of the research, he will present six evidence-based principles for youth gun violence intervention and prevention.
