In her 42 years as a Washington educator, Marie Verhaar has been privileged to work with students, educators and families in a variety of Preschool through 12th grade settings. She has worked in three districts as a classroom teacher, a district director, and currently as the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning for Tacoma Public Schools. She oversees areas such as curriculum, instruction, professional development, Advanced Programs, New Teacher Induction, Instructional Coaching, AVID, Early Learning, and Academic Equity. Marie’s goal is to equip educators with the skills, strategies, tools and resources to provide students with engaging and rigorous learning. She is committed to helping educators create academically rich experiences through a culturally responsive learning environment for all students. Marie believes that empowering students with access to advanced programs and AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is foundational to their life’s success.
